The year is 1918. World War 1 is raging in Europa. Meanwhile, Erna Jensen takes care her regular life at home in Bramstrup in Southern Jutland, where she lives with her simple son, Kalle. One day, the local land officer comes and picks up Kalle for war service on the German front line. Erna realizes that if she is to save Kalle from certain death, she must accompany him to war. Fate wants her to meet a deserting soldier. The two exchange clothes and identity, and disguised as private Julius Rasmussen, Erna pulls to the front. In the encounter with the war, unknown aspects of Erna are brought to life. It is the story of a woman who will not let a war prevent her from fighting for what she loves.
